Experiencing the New Year Blues?

Has it been a weird start to the new year for you? If so, I’m right there with you! And I’m hearing from lots of others too, who are sharing they’re feeling extra emotional, underwhelmed and generally a bit off. 

Here are some reasons why you might be experiencing a New Year haze and what to do about it:

  • Post-holiday Blues: After so much fun with family and/or time away from work, school and regular routines, it’s natural to have a period of readjustment back to the “real” world. If this sounds like you, try scrolling through your holiday photos, revisiting favorite family memories and journaling your gratitude for all you got to experience. While it won’t turn back time, it will help you extend the holiday glow as you ease into January.

  • Empathic Overload: All that time with family can mean little or no time alone, which for empaths, can create extra challenges in keeping emotional boundaries strong. Maybe you are feeling heightened sensitivity to others emotions, extra tired or an inability to motivate or stay focused. BTW, this can happen from too much news consumption or doom-scrolling also. Getting some much needed quiet, alone time can help you find your balance and reclaim your own energetic space.

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder: If you routinely feel down specifically at this darker, colder time of year, you might be experiencing SAD symptoms. This affects more people than realize it and shouldn’t be minimized or ignored! Try to find opportunities to still be active outdoors, especially if the sun is shining and make sure you talk to your healthcare provider. Here are some additional resources from the Cleveland Clinic to help understand and support SAD.

Tapping into what you are currently feeling (and potentialy why) is a huge step towards improving your mind, body and spirit connection. So even if you are frustated or disappointed by the start of the year, I hope you can give yourself the credit for this growth in self-awareness.

Choosing a Word of the Year

Happy New Year! Ready or not, 2023 is here, bringing a clean slate and a fresh opportunity to refocus, prioritize and set intentions. In previous years, I’ve gotten so excited by all the “new year new you” challenges, that I’ve signed up for way too many and not followed through. Sound familiar? 

This year I decided to scale back my January commitments, but one practice that I am doing is choosing a Word of the Year. This is a really fun and easy way to have an overall goal feeling or theme for the year. Our words become our manifestations, so let’s start taking ownership of what we want out of this life!

Now before you start feeling pressure about picking the perfect word, let me share some guidance to ease your mind. You can:

  • Choose a word that you’ve been thinking about or saying a lot

  • Pick the very first word that comes to mind

  • Sit in meditation and wait for a word to “drop in”

  • Start with a longer list of words and narrow down to one

There are endless choices and no rights or wrongs! Your word should simply be something that you aspire to, feels meaningful and resonates with you.

My word of the year is Embodiment. For me, this means going slower and allowing more time for play, exploration, integration and deeper knowledge. It also means even more awareness of my six senses and continued trust in my body's wisdom.

Reflection Rituals

As this year comes to a wrap, it’s natural to start thinking about all that was…and wasn’t. Reflection is a beautiful and necessary practice to take an honest look at our lives, so we can not only acknowledge all the beauty we experienced, but also the times we struggled, yet still persevered. 

Here are a few ways to look back, so we can step forward with a clearer picture of our past and focus on our future. Take some quiet time and sit with your journal or notes app and consider the following:

  • What are some of the major highlights from this past year? They could be family memories, work accomplishments or personal goals achieved. Why do these stand out the most to you? What are the feelings you associate with these times? What was involved in making these moments?

  • What are some of the challenges you experienced? Think about the hard things life threw at you or maybe the ones you caused yourself and/or others. What did you learn about yourself from how you approached and navigated these times? What would you do differently next time around?

  • What was on your goal list for 2022 that didn't come to fruition? There are a myriad of reasons things don’t happen, some of them material and some of them mindset. But ask yourself honestly, what got in your way, so you can see any underlying themes or trends occurring and make the necessary shifts.

It’s not always easy to take stock of our last year, especially if we feel disappointed in how it went. But it's important to allow ourselves to admit and move past any shortcomings and also recognize all the good we may have overlooked. In what is a hopefully very long life, not every year will be our best or brightest, but we can use those to learn about what we don’t want and get even clearer on how to do better.

And for those that did have a banner year, soak it all in. Relish the glow of contentment, pride, peace! You are entitled to ease and abundance and all the joy your heart can hold. Keep working hard and calling in all that you want to feel and experience.

Why it's Hard to Get What you Want

As we approach the final weeks of the year, many of us are in gift-giving mode, buying all the things for all the people. Creating our own holiday wish list of products or experiences may be easy, but when it comes to the bigger life things, like personal and professional goals, knowing and getting what we want can be challenging.

The Spice Girls have been asking us since the mid-90s...so why is still hard to tell what we really really want?

  • Lack of clarity: If you aren’t sure what you want, it’s certainly going to make it harder to get it. Sounds obvious, right? But you’d be surprised at how often the absence of clear, defined goals or desires is at the root of our struggles. Sometimes we can't find clarity due to fear, but it also could be that we've decided we are "too busy" to carve out the necessary time. Ask yourself honestly why you can’t see your future clearly and take note of what's coming up for you.

  • Lack of discipline: I’m not going to sugarcoat it - making new habits and breaking old habits is hard. You might have lots of false starts before something truly sticks. But that’s okay! Everytime you try again, you are building muscle memory for resilience, perseverance and adaptability. There are lots of hacks (try habit-stacking) and resources (check out Atomic Habits) that can help you get the lasting change you seek.

  • Lack of self-worth: If you don’t believe in yourself, it's going to impact your ability to receive and achieve. Our thoughts are more powerful than we realize, working both in our favor and getting in our way. When you think about what you want, can you truly see yourself getting it or do you feel doubt? Adding in self-esteem practices can go a long way towards overcoming imposter syndrome and other confidence-crushing feelings.

Are you Overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed right now? You are most definitely not alone. All week I’ve been hearing this same sentiment from clients and friends. And while many of us were raised with a “just get it done” attitude, perhaps this is a perfect time to reconsider if that is always the best way forward. 

Here are a few ways to know when it’s time to push-through and when it’s time to pause and assess your overwhelm.

  • You can feel it in your body. Our bodies are our greatest systems of awareness; where we can hold and process all our emotions. If thinking about an obligation creates a physical reaction, that’s a sign to slow down. So rather than ignoring or dismissing it, try paying attention to where specifically you are feeling it, and ask yourself what message it could be telling you.

  • You have Analysis Paralysis. With more choices at our fingertips than ever before, we can easily get stuck trying to determine the “perfect” one. If you're experiencing this, creating search parameters and a decision-making deadline can help you move through being overwhelmed and take action. However, if you find yourself in this limbo stage a lot, it’s definitely worth some self-exploration to find the root of this perfectionist pursuit.

  • You are Procrastinating. There are so many reasons we procrastinate, including fear (of failure, success or the unknown), indifference, and lack of desire. And each one gives us direction on how we should proceed. If it’s fear getting in your way, then taking any small action can help you feel more confident and motivated. But if it’s indifference or lack of desire, that’s a opportunity to re-evaluate if your to-do item is actually required or if it could be deleted or delegated instead. 

Please know, while these are great guidelines to follow, getting more connected to yourself and your intuition can help you determine when you need to be resilient and when you need to reassess. December Energy Themes

Happy December and welcome to the last month of 2022! Before you start into a tailspin of stress with holiday events, shopping, decorating and travel, I’m here with some beautiful energy themes to help you feel attuned to the incredible possibilities this month. All it takes is a clear, curious mind and setting the intention to be open to what comes in! Here are three things to feel into:

Peace: We all have a right to feel at peace in our bodies and our homes. But that doesn’t come without some work on our end. Make it a priority to carve out time for activities that bring you a sense of serenity and set boundaries on things (or people!) that leave you feeling overly stressed and chaotic. Peace also flows like a two-way river, so try pausing before reacting, be patient and kind when someone is struggling, and share your peaceful energy with all you encounter.

Angels: I know this might be a polarizing subject and honestly, I’m still a novice with the whole angel realm, but I’m here to share my perspective for whoever it resonates with. I do believe we can access and connect with energy outside of us, whether that means calling upon a passed loved one to communicate directly, asking for signs and symbols, or tapping into an Archangel to guide, protect or heal. This is a chance to play…the results may be subtle, including feelings of warmth, support and encouragement, but they also might totally surprise you with their power.

Creativity: We are not here as humans on earth to sit and stare at screens all day! We are here to create. To build, make, grow ideas from our hearts and our heads. Creativity is freedom and power; it’s not about perfection. So whether you love art, cooking, design, music, gardening, dance, writing or making social media content (but only if you enjoy it!), allow creativity to be a meditative process and remind you of the beauty you have inside.

Are you Struggling with Limiting Beliefs?

Did you know that we have subconscious “programs” running behind the scenes in our mind? Often referred to as limiting beliefs, these are thoughts that we’ve accepted as truth, preventing us from moving forward and achieving what we really want. 

Since these patterns of thinking are so ingrained in us, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. But that’s just what these beliefs are - stories we’ve told to ourselves (and others) so many times, we believe them to be true. Here’s how to start identifying limiting beliefs in your own life:

  • They are negative. These thoughts often start with “I can’t, won't, shouldn’t, don’t", etc and end with you feeling bad about yourself.

  • They are repetitive. They form a well-worn loop of doubt or unworthiness, circling around keeping you "comfortable" and stuck. 

  • They sound like excuses or versions of self-sabotage. If your friends or family voiced these same thoughts, you could easily see them for what they are.

Although it might be uncomfortable to admit, everything we experience in our life is a reflection of our beliefs. They influence our attitude and our actions. Digging under the surface, to identify and shift away from negative thoughts into a more positive, loving, inspired mindset, can have a ripple effect beyond your wildest expectations.

How to Get Into Alignment

One of my personal goals, and a topic I talk a lot about on my podcast and on social media, is Alignment. For me, being aligned feels like a beautiful reciprocal energy flow of giving and receiving. It feels fun and easy, is filled with magical synchronicities and lets me move quickly from thought to actualization. 

If you are new to this whole idea or aren’t quite sure you’ve experienced being in alignment before, it may actually be easier to identify with feeling the opposite…Misalignment. Being misaligned causes tension, a feeling of being unbalanced, disappointed and inauthentic. This push and pull can be an underlying source of your frustration, resentment, even anger. 

One of the biggest ways I see this happening with clients is when your inside doesn’t match your outside. In other words, what you think, feel and desire internally, is not congruent with what you do, say and attract externally. Over time, our goals and priorities can shift. And our life experiences can usher in new perspectives and redefined values. But, despite these changes, we often stay on the same path. This can be caused by a combination of things including:

  • Lack of clarity on who you truly are and what you really want

  • Limiting beliefs that keep you feeling lost, stuck or in a self-sabotage loop

  • Fear around the potential domino effect if you were to make changes 

Please don’t give up hope of overcoming these current challenges! Alignment is a magical place to manifest from because not only do you feel completely at one with yourself, but all that develops can be viewed with the lens of appreciation and serendipity. And getting there is much more accessible than you may realize.

Make a Lasting Change with the 3R Strategy

As Fall weather spreads across the country, change is most definitely in the air. The transformative energy this time of year is palpable. You can see it as the leaves change color and fall seemingly overnight. And you can feel it in the frantic push to get things done before 2022 closes out. 

So many of us desire changes in our lives, but struggle with making those changes stick. We start with lots of motivation, but before long, life seems to get in the way…again. One way to help overcome this challenge and create lasting change, is using the 3R strategy: Remind, Recognize, Reward.

Remind Yourself: There are lots of reasons we can be resistant to change, so using audio and visual reminders can keep us consistent and committed. Repeat an empowering mantra to yourself each morning and night. Create a custom alarm on your phone that reinforces the goal you are working on. Make a vision board of what your ideal outcome will look like. Keeping your desired change front and center can help make it more accessible and attainable.

Recognize your Growth: We can be so focused on the end objective, that we often forget to acknowledge all the strides we are making along the journey. Create a system for regular check-ins on your progress and time for personal reflection. Document your successes, along with the places where you’ve stumbled, so you can see what's working and what need to be retooled. Remember, some of the change is slower and more subtle, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t working just as hard. 

Reward Yourself: Having a reward system isn’t cheating or a cop-out; it’s creating a beautiful (and essential!) cycle for positive reinforcement. So think about some motivating gifts and develop goals that stretch you, but are still within your realistic grasp. Waking up every morning to exercise gets you a Lavender Latte at the end of the week. Working 10 hours on your new business plan means you buy that new journal you’ve been eyeing. The rewards don’t have to be monetary either - taking a long bath or spending an afternoon at your favorite hike work too!

Resistance to change isn’t always bad. In fact, it can be a subconscious way of knowing that something doesn’t feel right or aligned for you. But, if you are seeking changes to any part of your life, and repeatedly struggling to feel successful, then it’s time to get to the root.

Dream A Little Dream

"To live each day as if it were a dream"


This sentence came to me in a meditation earlier this week and tbh, I can’t stop thinking about it. The idea has stirred a wide range of thoughts, from dismissal and doubt to hope and aspiration. What would it take for me, for you, for all of us, to live each day as if it were a dream? While I’m still deep in reflection, here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

  • Practice Gratitude. “The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see” - Mary Davis. The Law of Attraction teaches that what we focus on expands - both the positive and the negative. So while it’s tempting to get stuck on all that we are “missing”, there is so much we take for granted. Remember that each day you awake, each smile and laugh you share, each bite of food that nourishes, each step your body takes, you are experiencing someone else’s dream.

  • Create a Fairy Tale Morning. The animated classics often start with the birds chirping, the sun shining, and carefree twirling through the open fields. And although most of us don’t live in a Disney fantasy, we can still harness that positive AM energy. Maybe it’s a wake-up song that gets you smiling, a quick meditation video of a beautiful sunrise or a quiet morning walk to start the day grounded and joyful. You are responsible for the energy you bring to each day.

  • Acceptance and Surrender. What if we looked at every little bump in the road as a planned detour? So much of our suffering is caused by resistance and ruminating on what shoulda, coulda, woulda been. While there is so much we can’t control, we can become more aware of the thought patterns, reactions and negativity loops that prevent us from enjoying the ride of life.
