Crystal Connection

Wondering how to make a crystal connection? Crystals have been drawing people to their power since practically forever. Evidence shows the earliest presence of crystals is 4000 BCE. Nowadays, it seems everyone I know carries a rose quartz in their bra. Oh, is that just me?

I was gifted my first bag of crystals around age 30, when I attended a weekend retreat aimed at “increasing your intuition” led by a medium and spiritual guide. I remember loving my new bag of goodies, but as the weeks went on, the connection didn’t stick. Focused on work and trying to get pregnant, I placed them in my nightstand drawer. I moved them from house to house, a grey and blue sack, hidden in plain sight.

It was a girls trip to St Simon’s about 8 years later that reignited my interest in crystal magic. If you’ve ever stood looking at a wall of crystals in little bins, you will understand what it feels like to be kid in a candy store…a spiritual candy store. In an instant, something inside me had reignited. After careful consideration, I selected three new stones. There in my tiny bags, which could easily fit in my pocket, was something just for me. I didn’t have to tell anyone, make anything, do anything. They were just there, giving me quiet strength, excitement, power.

There are lots of different rituals to select crystals for daily use. Some people lie out their crystals and pick one or two that they feel drawn to. There’s an incredible practice in creating crystal grids to literally line up a healing or manifesting intention. I often use a guided activation process, which I’d love to share with you.

  1. 1. Sit or stand with your eyes closed and hands in prayer position at your chest. While breathing in fresh, intentionally air, slowly raise your joined palms together above your head, to your crown chakra.

  2. Gently move your hands down back to your heart, pulling in all the divine guidance from above. Feel your feet (root chakra) and pull the energy all the way, doing a brief body scan to get guidance on what needs attention, focus, healing for today.

  3. Take another deep breath and with your eyes still closed, pick a crystal or two. Then rub your hands together to get a little heat and pick up each stone in a warmed palm.

  4. Do a quick look up of the stones you selected and head online to look up the properties. While there’s a ton of info online, if you really feel connected to crystals, check out the book Crystals by @goldirocks, it’s one of my favorites. Set an intention for the stones to guide your highest self and then tuck them in your pocket and set off on your day.

Let me know after you try! And of course, I would love to hear some of your favorite stones.

Speed-Changing

As a self-growth devotee, transformation is my love language. It’s the fuel that drives my daily exploration. So when my healer friend Monika proposed her new fast-track offering in exchange for a Human Design session, I was all in. I met my husband in college, so I was lucky enough to skip the whole Speed-Dating trend. But Speed-Changing? How could I resist finding out if you can turbocharge transformation?

The practice Monika offered is called Rapid Transformational Therapy, or RTT. Using a light version of hypnosis, the goal of RTT is to find key memories from childhood and adolescence that have formed a block in your growth and development. These past experiences lay deep subconscious roots, which present themselves in adulthood as limiting self-beliefs. According to Monika, these beliefs usually fit into one of three categories: I’m not enough, I don’t want to be different or That’s not available to me.

We started via Zoom, with a deep review of my intake form to identify what issue I wanted to tackle. For this session, I chose to look at some recurring themes of self-doubt and imposter syndrome that seem to keep resurfacing, despite years of reflection. Then Monika gently led me into a state of hypnosis, which allowed me to both access memories and be more suggestible to changing my beliefs. While we may hold very tightly onto beliefs as fact, they aren’t. Beliefs are only thoughts we keep thinking. So when we truly change our thoughts, real transformation and growth is possible.

In my session, we visited four separate memories that I hadn’t thought about in many years. I was warmly prompted to share how each memory made me feel and I was surprised to find the common themes of these seemingly unconnected events. I felt embarrassed, sad, lonely, hurt, misunderstood.

Monika helped me recognize the pattern between these unexpectedly important memories and my resulting actions.  I was different…and I hated it. This thought, repeated countless number of times, became a belief my ego created in order to keep me protected from those negative feelings. If I stayed small, never got too much attention and wasn’t too “out there”, then I would stay safe.

Gathering all this negative energy up from every corner of my body, I was guided to heal these memories and replace them with feelings of love, compassion and acceptance. I immediately felt a shift. I was lighter, clearer and more confident. I saw a new portal of energy literally open up before my eyes.

It was amazing how quickly I could see the connection between these memories and the limiting self-belief I created. It was born from a place of self-preservation and continued, despite my strong desire to step out from the shadows and into my light. It kept me needing validation, questioning my expertise and shying away from bold moves.

The next part of RTT is listening to a 10-15 minute audio recording for 3 weeks to solidify this more positive way of thinking.  I’ll report back with the details of how I navigate this process and any new insights I have.

In the meantime, I’m holding tightly to my new and improved self-image. After 30 years, I’m more than ready to shine.

You can find RTT Practitioner @Monika Holzner on social media and at her new website Continuously Choosing.

Have you lost your Mind(set)?

How can we stay positive in the midst of uncertainty, pain, fear? If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we have no idea what’s coming next. While we might have thought we had control in many aspects of our lives, the truth is the only thing we can ever control is ourselves in each. present. moment.

Our mindset is literally our collection of thoughts. Our frame of mind. Having a growth mindset helps you weather the storm. It’s the belief that you can grow, change, improve. It doesn’t mean pretending everything is perfect or living in denial of the truth. It’s acknowledging your missteps and identifying them as areas for future potential.

If you are struggling to keep your mindset in mind, you are not alone. It’s easy to let our circumstances and our (self-curated) cultural environment set the tone of not-enough-ness. But that’s exactly the time to reevaluate your thoughts and reset your mental loop. Here’s a few things you can do TODAY:

-       First, find silence & breathe. The first time you do this might be a struggle. The first minute might always be a struggle. Do it anyway. Sitting quietly and just breathing can help improve just about anything and leave you feeling more centered and refreshed. I like to schedule breathing breaks into my day. Just put them into your phone like any other appointment.

-       Next, take inventory of your most frequent thoughts. Again, this takes some work, but knowledge is power. And knowing where your thoughts keep going will help you identify your own mental minefield. We all have different areas of sensitivity based on our open centers and how we’ve been conditioned take in others energy. If you want more information on this Human Design awareness tool, send me a DM or comment below.

-       Finally, set the intention to make the shift. If your current self-beliefs aren’t aligned with your goal feelings, this is where the mindset work really takes shape. Let’s say you want to feel positive, bright and light, but the negativity loop is loud. Every time you have a negative thought, follow it by saying to yourself or out loud “But from now on, I see everything through the lens of positive possibility”. Don’t beat yourself up for the first thought, instead focus on your energy on changing the second thought. Over time, you will come to believe this new thought, because it will now be true.

So, what does your current mindset say about you? What are your beneficial beliefs and thought patterns? Where do you need to make some tweaks?

Goal Feelings

You started the year full of all the fire and focus to make it happen. And now here we are, 4 weeks into the longest month ever (why does January have 5 weeks??) and the cold might be dampening your spirits, along with your drive.

Sound familiar?

Let’s be honest. The pressure to make over your whole life in the span of 30 days is pretty ridiculous. Depending on your goals, it can be unrealistic and unsustainable.

But, as always, YOU have a CHOICE in how you will feel, in creating your own story. So instead of being pulled into an anxious tailspin, bombarded by messages about what goals I’m accomplishing this month, I’m going to continue to focus on GOAL FEELINGS.

Here’s my list of how I want to feel this month and for the foreseeable future. I will focus on creating these feelings inside and making sure all I do this month lines up to support me. This is great daily exercise to help you set your intention and reignite your fire. It’s also lovely to do monthly, to check-in on your progress.

**Accomplished: Get stuff done, but only what lights me up work-wise & play-wise

**Valuable & Valued: Come from a place of service & inspiration, stay true to my values

**Aligned: Spiritual, connected, grounded - don’t let the ego create a false/damaging narrative

**Gratitude - I have ALL I need, focus on the daily journey, not some unicorn destination

Would love to hear if you’ve ever worked on goal feelings & if you’d want to share below. Also, if you have never considered this idea, it’s definitely a mindset shift. I’d love to help you make your own list, so send me an email!

** Veggie Stand-ins: Healthy swaps to help you eat more veggies!
------------------------------------------------------------
Looking to increase your vegetable intake, but can't eat one. more. salad? I hear you! Read below for some fast, easy and healthy ways veggies can be a stellar substitute for your favorite carb.

Zoodle Nation: A Zoodle is technically the term for a Zucchini Noodle, but it's often used to describe any veggie noodle. They are the perfect substitute for pasta in both hot and cold recipes. To make these you need a Spiralizer (the official name for making pasta-type noodles out of veggies) and there are tons of inexpensive ones available. You can also buy Spiralized Veggies in the fresh and frozen section of almost any grocery store. Other veggies that work well:
* Sweet Potatoes
* Butternut Squash
* Beets
* Kohlrabi (pictured above)
* Cucumber

Grown-Up Ants on a Log: For some people, celery is only used a vehicle for peanut butter! But, it's also a great holder for a variety of different protein toppings. Some of my favorites:
* Spread a tsp of cream cheese, add lox/smoked salmon and sprinkle with TJs Everything Bagel topping
* Fill celery with 1 oz of Crumbled or softened Goat Cheese and top with tsp of Red Pepper Jelly
* Squeeze Spicy Brown or Honey Mustard and add 2-3 oz of Nitrate Free Turkey

Cauliflower is Queen: "If cauliflower can become pizza, you my friend can become anything"! This meme is so funny, but also true. Cauliflower has taken over the health world as one of the most versatile stand-ins. Yes, you can buy a yummy pizza crust, but one of my favorite uses is Cauliflower rice. Easily available fresh or frozen or you can make your own.
* Update your at-home Chinese food game, by making a killer Cauliflower Fried "Rice". Sauté the cauliflower with some avocado oil, add in peas, carrots, and scramble in an egg. Season with Chinese five-spice, tamari and sesame oil.
* Make Cauli Rice Bowls for Taco Night. Using cauliflower rice as base, top with cumin, chili powder and garlic. Then add your favorite fix-ins: avocado, beans, grilled chicken, etc.

Stack, Fill & Roll: Think of veggies as a super creative substitute for any cracker, shell or wrap.
* Instead of a sandwich: use sliced cucumbers, add your favorite condiment and protein
* Instead of tortillas or tacos: use thin Jicama slices to hold your tex-mex
* Instead of lasagna noodles: use zucchini and squash as your pasta layers
* Instead of toast: use a thin slice of sweet potato heated in the toaster oven & top with avocado

STILL A FEW SPOTS OPEN FOR THIS SUNDAY!

** Staying healthy in the Spring can feel like a never-ending battle. Between allergies, temperature changes and being run-down from a million different activities, my immune system is in need of some extra support. Enter Elderberry, the fruit from the Sambucus Tree. Native Americans and Herbalists have touted the antioxidant properties of Elderberry for centuries. I love daily Elderberry syrup as both a preventative measure and when I'm feeling sick. Just a tsp or 2 a day makes a world of difference. My kiddos also take it when they start to feel unwell and in our experience it has prevented and/or shortened any illnesses!

** Spring Sippers: Light drinks for porch weather!
------------------------------------------------------------
Springtime is the best time for refreshing cocktails while lounging on your porch. Here are some of my favorite choices that are lighter calorie and lower in sugar, so you can enjoy guilt-free.

Paloma: Tequila + Grapefruit + Soda. With approximately 70 calories per 1 ounce and no carbs or sugar, Tequila is one of the lightest alcohol choices.
* Add 1-2 ounces of Tequila to a glass filled with ice
* Top with club soda
* Add a generous splash of fresh grapefruit juice

Bloody Mary: A long-standing brunch favorite, Bloody Mary's are one of the most customizable cocktails. Choose a low-sugar organic mix or make your own for a 125 calorie drink packed with flavor!
* 4 oz unsweetened tomato juice
* Add 1 tsp each of lemon juice, horseradish and Worcestershire sauce
* Add 2 oz of vodka
* Garnish with celery, olives and veggie toppings for added nutrition

Aperol Spritz: If you haven't had one of these beautiful, low-proof drinks, you must try one! Aperol is a slightly bitter orange-flavored Italian liquor that is typically served as an apertivo, a happy hour drink served before the meal to aid digestion.
* Mix 1-2 oz of Aperol with club soda
* Option: Add 1-2 oz Prosecco for the full Italian experience

Mojito: Here's a perfect chance to use the mint that's taking over your garden! Grab a few mint sprigs and muddle (a fancy word for crush) into the bottom of a tall glass. When you are muddling, you can also add a heaping tbsp of whatever fresh produce you have in the house - pineapple, blackberries and cucumber are all great choices!
* Tbsp of muddled mint
* Add 1.5 ounces of your favorite white rum
* Stir in 1 tsp of agave syrup, an all-natural lower-glycemic sweetener
* Fill the glass with ice and lime-flavored sparkling water

Eating healthy while being a busy mom on the go is always a challenge. And while I try to eat as much whole food as possible, sometimes a pre-made protein smoothie is the best option for convenience and nutrition. Koia smoothies are one of my favorite choices. Packed with plant-based protein and tons of fiber, these shakes are dairy, soy and gluten-free with just 4 grams of sugar per bottle. They make a great snack for late afternoon car pool commute or paired with a fruit for a light breakfast.

Farmers Market Finds, FAQs, Wellness Finds, Monthly Mantra

Farmers Market Finds: Why choosing local is a healthy choice

------------------------------------------------------------

Proximity = Nutrition: The longer your produce is from harvest, the fewer nutrients it has. With the average produce item taking 5 days to travel, plus another 3-4 in the grocery warehouse, you can lose up to 40% of the nutrient value. Compare that with fruits and veggies picked just the day before consumption!

The Face Stops Waste: Have you ever played the game with your kids when you name all the things, places and people that worked to create something? Here’s how it looks in my house: Mom worked hard to earn money to buy this broccoli. The driver had to bring it to the market. And he got it from the farmer who picked it, after it was planted from a seed, watered and cared for...

Having a connection to where our food comes from and the hard working people who grow our produce is a game changer in lessening food waste and works wonders with kids who are less than enthusiastic about trying new veggies.

Environmental Impact: Think about every item in your local grocery store. Each item was delivered either by plane, train or automobile…or maybe all three. That’s a tremendous amount of fuel being used and creating air pollution leading to global warming. No, you alone can’t solve climate change just by purchasing your food from the local farmer’s market. But imagine if everyone bought local…now that’s real change.

** Q'S AND THEIR A'S

------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What is health & wellness coaching?

A: In the broadest terms, Health & Wellness coaching bridges the gap between where you are currently and where you want to be with your health. By helping you tap into your true motivation, a coach empowers you to turn your wellness vision into a real actionable plan.

Q: Why should I choose Lauren Ivy Health?

A: I have been in your shoes, putting my wellness on the bottom of my to-do list, while I prioritize the needs of my family. I can help you recognize your negative self-talk and self-sabotage tactics, because I’ve done the same things. I will listen to you, without judgment, and encourage you to take time for self-care, which is absolutely not self-ish.

Q: What can we talk about?

A: Coaching encompasses whole-self health, also known as “big picture wellness”. This includes healthy eating, exercise, weight management, sleep, stress, life balance, mindfulness, personal and professional goals.

Q: How many sessions do I need?

A: That’s completely an individual decision. I do not have a set program that I put all my clients into. We could work on a smaller change for a few weeks or larger changes for a few months.

Q: Why do I need a coach?

A: Even when you know what you want to change and should be doing to improve your life, it can be hard to figure exactly out how to fit it all in. A coach helps you develop your own action plan and brings the missing accountability you need to succeed.

February Challenge: Love You Mean It

What if in February, you decided to make a daily date…with yourself? One that you didn’t cancel the second something else comes up. That’s right, I’m challenging you to do one thing everyday for YOU. Not for your kids, spouse, friends, co-workers. Just for You.

It could be working out, making a healthy lunch, taking a bath, buying yourself flowers, getting a massage or just carving time out to read a book. It doesn’t have to be something you need to spend money on, book a sitter for or even leave the house for. But do something everyday. And keep real track of it. Write it in your journal or calendar. Post on social or text a friend daily; just make it official.

This February, the month of Love, show yourself some love. Real love. As in “I am my own person, apart from all the other people I love in care about and deserve more than I am giving myself”. What is one thing you can do everyday in the month of Feb to put yourself first? Can you show up, mean it, commit to it?

Check my IG @laurenivyhealth for all my daily self-love tips, tricks, inspiration!

Sweating your Sweat?

Looking to add a natural personal product to your every day routine? One place to start is under your arms! There have been some alarming reports about the potential dangers with traditional antiperspirant brands, due to aluminum (more on this in a second).

First, let’s start with a little science (in case you skipped some of your high school chem classes to go to breakfast, ahem).

Did you know that deodorant and antiperspirant are two different things? Deodorant masks sweat, it doesn’t stop it. It’s a fragrance to make you smell sweeter even though sweat doesn’t actually smell (crazy, right?). Sweat mixed with bacteria is what creates B.O. Antiperspirant on the other hand, was created to stop wetness.

While there are lots of “natural” ways to do this (such as baking soda, arrowroot, and shea butter) most of the mainstream brands labeled antiperspirant use aluminum, an active ingredient classified as a drug by the FDA. Aluminum’s job is to block the sweat glands, preventing sweat from happening. This is where the science reports and all the toxic versus non-toxic convo happens. Click here for some additional resources: http://time.com/4394051/deodorant-antiperspirant-toxic/ https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/myths/antiperspirants-fact-sheet.

There are a ton of brands from which to choose. Lucky for you, I have schvitzed my way through many of them. One caveat in these product reviews – sweat is unique to each individual. I’m in the average-to-slightly-sweaty category, and I worked out using each of these brands. All of the brands below are either classified as a deodorant or natural antiperspirant.

Schmidt’s

I heard about this brand from one of my go-to sources for new wellness products, Goop.com. Schmidt’s is available online and offers several scents; I went with a jar of lavender and sage. It comes with a teeny tiny spatula to dole out the deodorant. As a lover of all things mini, I was mildly obsessed with scooping out the product, rubbing it between my fingers, and applying to my pits. Ironically, the thing I originally loved most about this product was the reason I lessened my usage; after a while, it just became a messy annoyance. The product itself worked pretty well during a regular day, but it left my clothes feeling damp after a medium level workout. Cost: $8.99.

Scent: 3/5

Application:2/5

Post-workout Smell Test: 4/5

Kiss My Face

This is another well-known, non-toxic brand. They make a lot of personal products for your body, face, and hair. Unfortunately, it was not a winner for this Sweaty Betty. The lavender scent was nice and the bar application was easy. But after applying, I never really lost the slick, sticky feeling under my arms.  And I definitely don’t like that! All of the company's products are vegan and cruelty-free, so they are definitely worth checking out. Cost:$5.99.

Scent: 3/5

Application:3/5

Post-workout Smell Test: 1/5

The Healthy Deodorant (Lavanilla Laboratories)

Heads up: This might be a splurge product. Upon purchase at Anthropologie, my husband literally asked me with a distinct tone of incredulousness, “Just how much are you willing to spend on deodorant?” I wanted so badly for this to be my winning product, my ride-or-die, my “I told you it was worth it.” But it wasn’t. I loved the roll-on, I loved the vanilla lemon scent, heck I even loved the branding and packaging (which is cute enough to leave out on the counter), but it just didn't keep my underarms dry enough after spinning to head straight to the grocery store. And that's what this busy mom needs to do! Cost: $14.

Scent: 5/5

Application: 4/5

Post-workout Smell Test: 3/5

Moon Organics

This is a local, organic brand that my mom came across at the weekly Decatur Farmers Market (Go, Mom!). This is my current product winner. I like the frankincense and thyme smell, the product goes on smoothly and dries quickly. It does a pretty good job of covering up the smell after a hard and very sweaty hot yoga session. Plus, I love supporting a company based in Marietta. Cost: $9.

Scent: 4/5

Application: 4/5

Post-workout Smell Test: 5/5

One of the great things about starting your journey to eliminate toxic products with deodorant is the low price point. For about $10 you can try deodorant and see what you think, versus an expensive serum or face cream.

Have you tried any of these? Did they pass your sweat test? Would love to hear about your favorites, so comment below!
